From Memphis To Vegas – From Vegas To Memphis
A strange hybrid double LP combining a second album from the Memphis sessions (just ten tracks of varying quality, not even including the hit version of “Suspicious Minds”) with a live album that, if it was intended to showcase Elvis’ breakthrough Las Vegas performance, could have been more effectively sequenced and more generous in its selection. It did include a seven-and-one-half-minute live version of “Suspicious Minds,” along with strong, occasionally overheated, but undeniably exciting arrangements of songs both new and old (including a driving “Mystery Train/Tiger Man” medley). The double album sold 300,000 copies before it was split up into two individual albums – but there seemed little question that either, or both (particularly a well-selected studio album, with “Suspicious Minds” as its centerpiece), might have been a stronger artistic and commercial entry.
