Elvis Presley’s First Sun Session
News · Jul. 5, 2017

Elvis Presley's legendary career began to take flight on this day in 1954, when he logged his first session at Sun Studios in Memphis with producer Sam Phillips, guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. That session famously ended with the recording of "That's All Right," the A-side to Elvis' first single—but how did it start?

These previously unreleased takes of "Harbor Lights," a No. 1 hit in 1950 for Sammy Kaye and His Orchestra, mark the beginning of that fateful session, a defining moment for the future King of Rock and Roll. It's one of 85 tracks on the forthcoming 3CD deluxe box set A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings—the complete account of this formative period in rock history. Listen Here.
